Carcabuey Municipal Historical Museum

Wander through its halls and discover the history of a town that traces its roots back to ancient times.

Picture in your mind a landscape that once was an ancient sea and engrave in your retina the image of petrified animals.

Witness the evolution of the first human groups that inhabited the area and embark with them on the path of technological development. Contemplate the arrival of peoples from the Mediterranean and receive from them the wisdom accumulated over centuries.

Live our history firsthand and become a part of it; only in this way can you understand the ways of life of the communities that, from prehistoric times to the present day, have shaped our cultural identity.

The museum is structured into 7 rooms, differentiated by colors and historical periods:

• Room 1: Natural Environment Room Karstic forms and the geological and paleontological richness. The landscapes around us are the result of surprising geological processes that occurred millions of years ago. The sequence of these transformations is recorded in the marl, gypsum, limestone, and dolomite rocks, with imprints of ammonites and sea urchins persisting.

• Room 2: Prehistory Room Remains from the Stone Age - Paleolithic and Neolithic - and the Metal Ages, Copper and Bronze, are displayed in the showcases. Prehistoric communities obtained raw materials (bone, wood, copper, flint, etc.) from nature to make containers, clothing, and tools for their daily lives.

• Room 3: Protohistory Room Exhibits remains from the Tartessian and Iberian periods. Reference is made to a ceramic urn of the "Cruz del Negro" type from the 7th century (Orientalizing Period), found on the Castillo hill.

• Room 4: Roman Room Remains from the Roman period are displayed, with particular emphasis on epigraphy, demonstrating the importance of the Roman municipality of Ipolcobúlcola (Carcabuey). This includes press feet from oil mills, ceramic containers like dolia, ceramic materials, etc.

• Room 5: Medieval Room Consists of two sections: the Visigothic period represented by metallic artifacts, and the Arab-Andalusian and Castilian periods. It is complemented by two models of the Castle and Puente Piedra (Stone Bridge).

• Room 6: Modern Room Especially documented with informative panels, complemented by a view of Baroque constructions and a model of the Church of the Assumption.

• Room 7: 19th and 20th Centuries: Documents the historical, social, economic, and political situation that Carcabuey experienced during these two centuries. It is characterized by being a period of highs and lows, where the municipality made great advances, such as the change from paths to cobbled streets, but also suffered setbacks such as political bossism, unemployment, and illiteracy.

• Contemporary Room: Corresponding (19th, 20th, 21st centuries) dedicated to the ethnological heritage present in the locality, such as its festivals, customs, traditions, or gastronomy, highlighting olive oil and quince, shaping the identity and uniqueness of the people of Carcabuey.
